Questions

The privacy and terms pages are drafts. This page describes how the code behaves today.

What is popple?

popple is a set of small poetry sites, called instruments. Each one does one thing with poetry: blackout poems, poems written facing paintings, a writing desk with rule checks, and others. You can see the list on the home page. popple is an Argo Academics project.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no sign-in.

Is it free?

Reading, writing and printing are free. The teacher packs can be printed and shared free of charge under CC BY-NC 4.0, which means they can't be sold by someone else. No paid offer is live. The support page says so.

Is what I write public?

Not by default. Anything you write in an instrument is private to its link: only people you give the link to can read it. It appears in a public gallery only if you send it there, it passes the automatic check, and a person approves it.

What is a keeper link?

When you save a piece, you get a second link, the keeper link. It is the only way to send that piece to a gallery or take it down. The part after the # is kept in your browser. Only a hash of it is stored on our side. If you lose the keeper link and the browser that saved it, you cannot manage that piece.

What does the automatic check look for?

When you ask for a piece to go public, the check refuses it if it contains language the gallery can't carry, a web address, an e-mail address, or a phone number. A refused piece stays private on its link, and the page tells you which of those it found.

Who approves pieces?

A reviewer: a person, not the automatic check. Nothing becomes public without that approval.

How do I report a poem?

Every public piece has a report button. A report sends the piece back to review. A reviewer decides what happens next. A report alone does not take a piece down.

How do I take a piece down?

Use the keeper link and choose to take the piece down. It is hidden at once. Its link then shows that the piece was removed, and the words are not shown anywhere.

Are there ads?

Only on some reading pages, and only if you accept ads on the banner. Ads are never shown on pages where you write, or beside a piece that is private to its link. They are non-personalised. If you say you are under 18, you see no ads. There are no ads in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland until a consent tool is in place.

Do you know how old I am?

No. We don't ask for your age. Under-18 is something you can say on the consent banner, and the banner is what controls ads.

What do you store?

The text of what you save, any title, any display name you give, the source of public-domain material, the status of the piece, and a hash of the keeper token. We don't store your e-mail address or your IP address. To limit abuse, the sites combine your IP address with a random value that changes each day and keep only the scrambled result. The full policy is on the privacy page.

Where did the texts come from?

From public-domain collections such as Project Gutenberg, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Each piece credits its source. Anything in a pack is our own text, unless it says otherwise.

Can I use these in class?

Yes. Print the packs and share the links. Please keep the licence line on any copy. Don't sell copies.
