Privacy
Draft for review. Not legal advice.
This policy covers popplepoetry.com and every popple instrument on its subdomains, including ELIDE (elide.popplepoetry.com). It explains what we collect when you use them, which is very little. popple is an Argo Academics project, run under Argo Academics' auspices.
No accounts
There is no sign-up and no sign-in. We do not ask for your name, e-mail address, phone number or age. When you save a piece you may add a display name of up to 40 characters. It is optional, it appears with your piece, and it cannot contain an e-mail address or a web link.
What we store
- The piece you save: its text, any title, the optional display name, and when it was made. In ELIDE this includes the order and timing of your redaction strokes.
- For pieces made from public-domain material, a record of that source (for example the book or painting).
- Where an instrument offers it, a one-way hash of a private keeper token, so the browser that saved a piece can manage it later. The token itself stays in your browser.
- Whether a piece is private to its link, waiting for review, public, or removed.
Your IP address
To stop abuse, we limit how often one visitor can save or search. To do that we combine your IP address with a random value that changes every day and keep only a scrambled result. We never store your IP address, and the daily change means visits on different days cannot be linked.
Who can see your work
In instruments where you write your own words, everything you save is private to its link by default: only people you give the link to can read it. A piece appears in a public gallery only if you choose to send it there, it passes an automatic check, and a person reviews and approves it. Anyone can report a public piece, which sends it back for review. You can take down a piece you made from the browser that saved it.
ELIDE is different because its poems contain only words from public-domain texts. A titled ELIDE poem made from a public-domain text appears in ELIDE's gallery. Poems made from text you upload are always private to their link.
Your browser
Some instruments keep drafts and keeper tokens in your browser's local storage so you don't lose your work. This stays on your device and is never sent to us except when you choose to save.
Advertising
Some reading pages (galleries, public pieces and this site's home page) may show ads from Google AdSense, but only if you accept ads on the banner each site shows. We record your choice in a cookie called elide_consent, which expires after a year. Visitors who say they are under 18 see no ads. We only ever request non-personalised ads, because school students use these tools. Ads never appear on pages where you write, or beside work that is private to its link. Google may use cookies to serve and measure ads; see how Google uses information from sites that use its services. We do not show ads to visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland until a consent tool is in place.
Public-domain material
Texts and artworks come from public-domain collections such as Project Gutenberg, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago, and are credited to their source.
Hosting
popple runs on Cloudflare. Your pieces are stored in Cloudflare's data services, which may be outside Australia.
Access, correction and removal
Because we hold no account details, we usually cannot tell which pieces are yours unless you have the keeper link. To ask about a piece, or to make a privacy complaint, e-mail admin@argoacademics.com.au. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au).
